with an upadate of the dnn version some settings that are to be web.confif absolutely considers !  If the update will be run with wrong settings, so can corupt the database!

  1. backup the old web. config
  2. create new web.config from relase.config
  3. change the database settings (2 times !!! )
  4. copy the machin keys from the old web.config (this is absolutely necessary!)
  5. change the databaseowner in the new web.config to your database username with dbowner rights or set to ""

An incorrect update can destroy the connection establishment to the data base.   If you are using wrong machine keys so you can try to make a new db user with owner right, and try reupdate.
