 The manual on page 13 says I need to change a few lines in web.config (renamed as per manual instructions)

This line is confusing me

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>

I have windows authentication logon for the database .. do I need to change anything here ? My database is named DotNetNuke so it should just work right ?

On page 15 it says this

" By default it is set to “dbo” and in most cases this attribute should be left this
way. However, some SQL Server DBAs (in particular in Shared Hosting Environments)
may not grant the user you identify in the connection string db_owner privileges. In this
case, set the databaseOwner attribute to your login user.

What ? .. do I use the user I made earlier ? or just leave it ?

Trying to do a simple install on my own winxp sql express box ....

You need to create a database user account and give it database owner privileges to the DNN database. This is the username/password you'll put in the connection string. This is typical for any database.

Somehow .. I have a site working .... I didn't need to touch that string in that file.

I did use a template called  DotNetNuke_template.mdf from another site ... somehow it now works ...

God knows what I did .. god help me if I ever have to set it up again .. its a nightmare.

The biggest problem is of course I have no idea what I am doing ..

Funny, I get a different error every day, today my error is this:

Could not find file 'D:\web\dotnetnuke\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\DotNetNuke_template.mdf'.

I would really like to know why it keeps needing this file.

That is the problem with the setup: not knowing what you're doing. No offense to you or anyone else, but when you do it the first few times, it's a pain. Once you get the hang of it, you can do it in your sleep. Just hope that you don't ever do it so much that you dream about it... Ugh! Talk about nightmares! Honestly, we all have problems getting it setup the first few times. Don't let that get to you.
