After upgrading from 5.01.01 -> 5.04.04 I ran into the known issue with the XML module. Fixed that by deleting the contents of App_code\XML (I'll grab the latest XML module later -- it isn't used currently). Now, upon initial load of each portals home page I get the following error:
A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

If I log in as admin, go into edit mode, navigate to another page, then back to the home page, I receive no error... until I switch into view mode.

I checked the log viewer, but nothing stood out as to the culprit:

One of the portal home pages is extremely simple, an HTML module without much content in it and a Google Analytics module.

Any clues?

So, I did some more testing... I added a new page with nothing on it (other than my Google Analytics module, which was automatically added to the page). I saw no issues on this page in either view or edit mode.

I then added a single HTML module to the page and I now see the same error as previously. When in edit mode the page displays fine until you switch to view mode.

I also dug the install file for the HTML module out of the 5.04.04 install package and reinstalled the module, no change to the situation.

After some digging around I discovered that my web.config file had not been updated properly by the installer. So, I loaded the version from the install package along with mine into UltraCompare and manually added the missing pieces. That seems to have fixed it.

Thanks for posting this thread.  I was upgraded from/to the exact same versions as you and ran into the same problems.  I also ran into the Telerik DLL problems.  Like you, my web.config was not updated by the upgrade.  Comparing and manually editing solved most of the problems.  I still have a situation where my host account can't use either of the file managers - all buttons are disabled, but that's a hold over from before the upgrade.  Again, thanks for posting the problem and solution.
