This is a bit odd. New install of DNN (DotNetNuke_Community_05.05.01_Install) on windows 7 ultimate/IIS 7. Note I bound the site set to run under dnndevmach.com and not localhost as typical, but I've done that for testing other dev and other dev dnn sites without issue.

DNN Installs, but when I navigate to home page I get the base page (content area, text and width adjusters), with a label which reads, "Sponsors" and no sponsor content. I do get DNN community log, Home menu, You are here: Home, register and login links, privacy, copyright, terms of use.

clicking login returns:
http://www.dnndevmach.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2flogin.aspx%3freturnurl%3dhome.aspx
with the page only displaying icon_authentication_32px.gif

clicking register returns:
http://www.dnndevmach.com/register.aspx?returnurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.dnndev.com%2fhome.aspx
with the page only displaying icon_users_32px.gif

Anyone ever experience anything like this before?

Not the same, but something similar we had when one our customer changed settings for login page in the site settings. Then he had no success on login. May be you can look in the DB in the table Portals, fields LoginTabId, UserTabId. If they are different from NULL, then please back it to NULL.

Thanks for the reply.

I think at this point I’m going to try to install an older version and see if I have the same issue.

If I wasn’t clear this was a fresh install and logging in was never an option. I also didn’t change any tables in the db until after the issue presented and then I only added an alias to the portal alias.

At this point I’ve tried two separate installs (both with fresh databases) the standard install (non-auto) and I also used Mitchel Seller’s set up (which bypasses the auto config setup).

As to your question, I don’t see anything amiss there:

(1 row(s) affected)

So I’ll try installing something like 5.2 or 5.3 and see if the issue repeats.

most likely there are permissions issues, make sure to grant full file system permissions to the account used by asp.net (as specfied in the App pool settings).

I thought I’d post an update for those who may run into this issue or try to troubleshoot a site with this issue.

In IIS AppPool settings can conflict due to contradictory settings in various locations.

Under Application Pools check both Basic Settings and Advanced Settings. Under Basic Settings set Framework and Pipeline mode. Under Advance Settings set Framework, Managed Pipeline Mode, and Identity.

Under Sites check both Basic Settings and Advanced Settings. Under Basic Settings set Application pool. Under Advance Settings also set Application pool.
