After installing DNN 5.6, sites which were validating XHTML 1.0 Transitional now aren't. They all have these types of errors relating to some new link tag the core is writing:

Line 27, Column 66: value of attribute "id" invalid: "2" cannot start a name
…ss="top_tag_line_content">
<div id="dnn_ctr24…

It is possible that you violated the naming convention for this attribute. For example, id and name attributes must begin with a letter, not a digit.

That would definitely be the case based on the information you've posted here. You could check if this has been added as a bug in the support system http://support.dotnetnuke.com, if not please go ahead and add it.

Any word on this issue. My clients are plenty pissed. Should I try to downgrade back to 5.3 instead?

If you use the pageblaster module, you can fix the error with this replacement rule: XHTML RUle ) Paste it in the generic filter section of the snapsis.pageblaster.config file in the root! BTW, I think it's a shame that DNN released version 5.6 with this and the Google Analytics bug in there and still hasn't released a bug fix. This bug means that every site on DNN 5.6 is not w3c compatible anymore. DNN's own site also has this bug (and plenty others...)
