Hello

How can I move my DNN-Installation from one server to another?

I did not manually install DNN, both hosters have an automatically installaion of it. Now I had the ideo to expert the template and then to import it on the new site.

But I can only select the new template while creating a new portal. That is then working (incl. the whole content)

But as I have already (due to the automatic install) one portal on the domain I registered, I can only create a sub-portal.

So I tried to delete the Main portal and then to move the newly created portal (which contains the right content) to the domain name, but I did not succeed...

How can I get my content from one server to another?

Thanks

Sven

What I've done in the past is just ftp all my installation files from one host to the other. You have to make sure your portal alias is modified to reflect the new url unless you are keeping the same one and that you have the required permissions. If your SQL database is also moving usually you can just back it up and restore it on the new site. Of course you have to modify your connection string in the web.config to reflect the change.

Although a lot of hosts offer to install DNN for you I find that I have more control over my own installations. You do not have to take the automatic install if you don't want it. Also no real need to mess with exporting and importing templates.

Good luck,

Mike
