This is my environment:

* Developing several sites (www.domain.com; www.otherdomain.com)

* Developing in the same machine ( VS .NET 2003)

* The IIS default web site points to http://localhost

* The virtual root of www.domain.com in my PC points to http://localhost/domain and, another virtual root points to http://localhost/anotherdomain

Now, my newbie questions:

--> How could develop the sites domain.com and anotherdomain.com in the same machine?

-->If I try to modify the first site, how could avoid to change the pages for the second one?

-->Is There any recommendations, guide o best practices to set up this environment?

I really appreciate your guidance

The way to spoof a domain name locally is to change your hosts file ( c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts ).  Note there is no file extension, but it is a text file.  You can add directions for any domain you wish... your local networking will redirect the request but the HTTP headers will still carry the domain info so it looks to the website like the request was sent in by DNS.  So an entry into your hosts file like:

127.0.0.1     www.domain.com
127.0.0.1     www.anotherdomain.com

Will work just fine.

Thank you, swillhit. I'll try this as soon as possible.

I suppose it'll also be necessary to provide each domain registered in my IIS with IP headers configurarion to differentiate with respect each other. Am I right?

By the way, I know how to do this in Windows 2000 or 2003, but not in the console of IIS in XP, the SO I'm programming for. Do you know the way how to provide differents headers to each virtual directories in XP?

Many thanks again!

You will need seperate database instances for each site and their web.config connection strings must point to the correct database on your server.

There is no good place to learn this stuff, I'm still working on mine. I am on a different problem. I have two sites up and running now.

It's like changing a head gasket for the first time; take your time and try to find help.

Another ideas:

I've found in this link  http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20030615.asp and this fine site: http://www.iisfaq.com/ the workaround to have several web sites (no virtual directories) against XP Prof.

Now, thanks (JohnAskew), I'm going to shake my head against the other troubles.

Thanks every body. I'll post new findings, if usefull to anyone.
