Hello all,

I need to change my machineKey (it didn't get changed on install) and I can't do an upgrade right now. Is there a documented (or undocumented) way of doing this? I have access to development and QA installs so that I can figure this out before doing it in a live system.

Thanks,
- Fred

no, there is no documented way, as the machinekey is used to encrypt the user passwords, so if you change it you will not be able to log in. If you only have a few users (e.g. host and admin), i recommend creating a new portal, and then copying the new machinekey and the encrypted passwords (and SALT values) from the user table over.

I would say that Cathal's recommendation is the best way to go.

You could also just change the values, create a new user (via registration) then copy it's password and salt values over to the existing users to default them.  I have a tutorial on my blog site about copying passwords from one user to another.
