I'm absolutely new to DNN and web development... I'm a total newbie on this stuff.

Is it possible to:

  1. Create a child portal that would be able to interface with the original database from the parent?
    1. need to be able to access the original user info from the parent.
  2. Create a second (separate) DSN for an outside data connection?
    1. need to be able to display outside info on a users account page to show information pertaining to specific users
    2. there are new (other than default roles) roles that would enable certain users to see certain info on their own accounts
  3. Create user specific profiles for others to be able to see?
    1. much like a myspace or even a facebook or something similar.
    1. to be able to upload images into their own galleries
    2. to be able to post their blogs on their own pages

If there is anything anyone can do to help me out, I'm open to any and all criticisms, ideas, and input.  I'm easy going that way.

So, please let me know what all is out there and if you have sample codes, pages, and more I'd be more than happy to read and get whatever input some of you may have.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.... In fact, please disregard the previous entry and look at this instead:

I need to be able to have users see specific information from an external data source.  How would I go about doing that?  I'm assuming that a separate connection string is needed in my config file.... yes?  I'm also assuming that there isn't a module already in place for this type of thing... Yes?

So, would I have to create a whole new module?  Or can I just create the connection string and plunk the information into a table using a hard coded page?
