I am trying to create a development site - (made from an exact copy of my live site) on a different web server and different db (but same SQL server).

I have followed these steps:

added a new parent portal in portals
created a backup of the database (called myDnn)
restored db backup using a different name  (called myDnnDev)
copied all files from source server to target server
setup IIS
changed connection strings in web.config

- I can see the site on my new server and it has my default.aspx displayed with my css info.

- However, it does not display my content (or the content from the db, such as the navigation). And i have copied the content from existing portal to new portal.

- any ideas what could be going wrong?

regards,
mark.

Is it showing any content at all? Did you update the portal alias table with the new url? This wont cause data to not show up, but it will redirect your URL back to the original site.

Hi there, These are the steps I've taken to create a Dev site. 1. On the production site, add a portal alias for your dev site. (e.g. http://dev.site.com) 2. All the steps you outlined above 3. On the production site, remove the dev portal alias That should be it. If you created a whole new parent portal then the contents of the original site doesn't move to the new portal. Different portalID and all hope that helps regards

yes, it is showing content (my page outline or my skin, along with search box, date, all the CSS style information including a flash banner and footer etc. - its probably showing this because the skin is located inside the _default folder - available to all portals)
it's just the inner content and navigation that's missing - everything which should be inside the skin.

I think i went wrong creating a whole new portal instead of just creating a portal alias?

I was under the impression that if i create just a portal alias - that all this does is merely create a new link to my 1 and only site, so not sure how this would be classed as a separate development area?

(up until now, iv'e just been working on the one site, on a live server. But, now i want to create another copy of this site elsewhere to do some more testing. Hence the reason for wanting to create an exact copy and why i created a new portal. Not sure if creating a portal alias will do what i'm looking for? - or will it?
Can I have a portal alias and use it like a separate development area?).

Hi again,

The reason you can't see your inner content is because the content is linked to a PortalID.

Each portal (parent or child) you create will get a unique ID.  And the pages and modules created under that Portal ID will be linked to that site.

For example, let's say your live site has a portal ID of 0.

All pages you create and module in those pages are linked (directly or indirectly) to the PortalID of 0.

When you create a new portal, that new Portal will have an ID of 1.  None of the page or modules you created in portal 0 will be visable in Portal 1

This, I believe is problem you are experiencing.

That's why in my suggestion I said not to create a new portal.  Just copy the existing database and code and ensure your dev site's portal alias is in the portals table.

Hope that makes sense.
