I am with Newtek hosting, which used to be Crystaltech hosting. Over the years, I have often set up an unnamed domain ID account, installed DNN, and once site development was finished, renamed the IP address to the new site domain. This has worked without issue more times than I can count. Recently, I did this on a new install of DNN7.  After the reneme, the site skin is broken, the images are gone and I cannot log in.

After complaining about this, I was told that the domain id was being referred to several times in the database. I was not aware that DNN needed to refer to anything outside of itself within the installation.  That would mean that there are now paths using the alias:  domianid243398/directory/file.   I cannot figure out why, or where these would be. Likewise, why would the site no longer work referring to the IP address? Are these things handled differently in DNN7 and the latest IIS?

Is anyone aware of why and how a DNN installation refers to the domain of the directory where it is installed? They did kindly offer to let me pay $100 an hour for their help in fixing this but I am not convinced of their assessment. Especially since I went to FTP and they had needlessly replaced my FTP user with one of their own.  If anyone has even an idea of what is going on and can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

I'm not sure that's true - as DNN has always supported muiltiple domains for a site (i.e. portal aliases) and also separate sites via child domains, we work hard to ensure that do domain is stored in the database i.e. only relative links/virtualise id's and not absolute paths are stored. As to the behaviour of DNN 7, we have not changed anything with regards to IP/domain or portal aliases - anything you did before should continue to work as expected (I have multiple sites locally homes to IP addresses/multiple domains)

I have run into this a second time. Frankly I think it is an IIS problem of some sort but since I am on shared hosting I have limited access to that. The site is simply redirecting. The IP and primary domain are in the PortalAlias table so I have no idea why a site that was working fine before the changeover by the hosting company, now cannot even be accessed via the IP address. I started a new thread for my latest issue but I see this one is still pretty close to the top of the forum. My bad.

I had to rebuild the whole site last time that happened. The hosting company said they don't know what the problem is and good luck.

Should the HomeTabID be NULL in the  PortalLocalization table? I also have discovered that the site works only at the following address, which tells me there is an IIS default page issue, maybe:

working:  http://thestoneshop.org/Home

not working:  http://thestoneshop.org/Default.aspx   nor typing in the URL www.thestoneshop.org, which directs back to the Default.aspx page. Same thing when accessing the IP.

I did reset the  portal alias list for the URL to be the main alias and the IP is still on the list. I also set HOME.aspx as the default page in IIS. At least it's better than it was.

Thanks

hometabid should have a value, that tabid value is used to read the page from the tabs table, so in cases where you request the site without a page e.g. mysite.com , DNN can work out what page to load
