I am working my  way through the book DotNetNuke 4.0 Web Site Creation in VB 2005 with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express written by Nick Symmonds.

I note I am not the only one, but other posts tend me somewhat old - so I will start a new thread.

I am using DNN 4.5.5, VWD, SQLEXPRESS

All was going well until the sample project says to use images module - I can find no reference to this anywhere. Likewise a contacts module (although there are alternatives to this). I have managed to work around these.

The real stumbler comes in at page 195 however where the book instructs to run some sql from a file timepunch.sqldataprovider - which does not exist ! - yes I have been on the apress site and downloaded source.

The module is created however under 4.5.5 but I cannot install it - As Host I find 'Module Definitions' and can validate the timepunch.dnn module but when I come to 'install new module' I get: INVALID FILE EXTENSION FOR CUSTOM MODULE TIMEPUNCH.DNN. I presume I am doing something crass - any hints anyone?

Can anyone tell me if the book is hereafter total rubbish (and whether that ius true for Nick Symmonds and/or Apress) or am I using the wrong version of DNN

Thanks (in eager anticipation)

1) I do not have the book. Is there some way to contact the author?

2) The Image module was renamed to Media

3) Review your project, as it shouldn't be named Timepunch.dnn, the dnn extension is reserved for the dnn manifest.

Feels like the book is somewhat out of sync with the current DNN version.

But as for files like a timepunch.sqldataprovider - they would be files that should have been supplied or at least explained in the book.
Its not a file that comesith DNN as such.

It is out of Sync but thanks to both for the response, the dnn file is a manifest - and it now installs so I can move on to the project

I am keeping this thread going as others may be working through the same book.

I have been doing the amendments in the DAL and AAL as instructed but after a crash (!) the project will not build - errors such as

Name 'Framework' is not declared in Dataprovider.vb

Type iDataReader is not defined in Dataprovider.vb

Type 'Entities.Modules.ISearchable' is not defined in HtmlTextController.vb (which I had not even touched)

It looks like the whole is missing something very basic - is dnn getting hit by something anyone has seen before? reinstall time again unless anyone as any ideas.

I have reinstalled the starter pack to no avail and am at a loss as to how to procede. I am preparing a new machine for my next efforts to see if I can inch forward.

I have the exact same problem on page 195 of the book.
The TimePunch.sqlDataProvider file is missing. Can't go on until I find the answer.
Aggrevating.
