hello,

im a long-time asp.net app dev, but am thinking ab out using DNN for a non-profit group. they would like a community style portal, where admins can manage users, publish recent data, events, documents, house forums, etc. DNN sounded like a good fit for this.

naturally i have some questions... mostly related to customization.

1) if i want custom functionality (say for a tool specific to my client), how do i do this? create a traditional ASP.NET page that works w/ DNN somehow, or by creating a custom module?

2) some of the site hosts offer auto-installs of DNN. is custom code typically compatible w/ these environments? or if you go w/ the auto-installs are you locked to their stock modules?

...any help you can provide is appreciated.

thanks,
matt

DNN uses a fairly standard 'portal' architecture, which means, portal -> pages -> modules

it comes with a bunch of core 'modules', you can write your own, or purchase 3rd party modules then install them into your portal for use on your pages.

sites that offer 'auto-installation' of DNN do not normally lock down the portal and will allow you to install new modules. I would just double check with your host first. Just make sure you have 'HOST' access to your DNN portal ( meaning you can log in with the HOST account id and password )

...cool. sounds like then, what one does is write their new functionality into modules, package it, and install it.

thanks,
matt
