With re-invent the only thing that ever happened was that web based email went down for about 15 mins once. I have a process polling them and they are always up...

m6.net have a better web based control panel for IIS and SQL Server (when it worked), but other than that re-invent are in every way superior.

I'd stay away from Gate.com at all costs.  About three weeks ago the server my database was one went down.  When it came back online, it only had 4 tables.  After calling support they said I couldn't prove I lost data, so they wanted to charge me for a restore.  Since I've moved to PowerDNN.  So far I couldn't be happier ( other then price, but I guess you get what you pay for ).

Do you use Oracle?  Then try GoldFish.Net

Get it from CNET Download.com!

I may as well add my bit about WH4L. I've written extensively about them in various threads and forums, but haven't really added anything since moving from a shared Premium to an Advanced VPS account. The claimed 99.9% uptime is easily met on my current VPS account, but the shared account was as low as 90% for DNN sites.

I should point out that I want total flexibility to create as many sites as I want, add any number of domains, email, databases, both MS and MySQL and run and manage both DNN sites and PHP sites in the same place. Full control over DNS has also been beneficial in that I use Google Apps for Domain to host email for some clients now.

My judgement of WH4L is:

  • Shared accounts - Ok for PHP/static sites, rubbish for DNN!
  • Semi-dedicated VPS - Like a shared account that works, but no PHP!
  • Advanced VPS - Top notch, all the features, install anything I want,  and with real performance
Last month's uptime on my Advanced VPS: 99.96% Downtime:15 min, 34 sec (was upgrading DNN to 4.51) - The server never goes down. The MySQL server has gone down for a few minutes twice.
  • Control panel - I think it's excellent and very powerful
  • Apps are always kept up to date, phpMyAdmin, Smartermail.. everything is always upgraded, DNN 4.51 is on the auto-installer.
  • Support - They mean well.. and they do try and fix your problems...  but man!! They just can't communicate.

In all seriousness however.. most other VPS hosting I looked at didnt' even offer any included support... so If I was going to get the same suport as I had been getting all along on my cheapie account, I decided that would be fine. Now I'm 5 months into the VPS and it is fine.

Also.. I ran hundreds of tests using iwebtools speedtest over the years.

This is the response time of a bunch of domains on the shared account:

Load time (secs)

2.67 seconds

8.54 seconds

11.54 seconds

20.23 seconds

9.63 seconds

3.61 seconds

9.32 seconds

6.12 seconds

0 seconds

Load time (secs)

2.56 seconds

6.99 seconds

6.69 seconds

8.26 seconds

8.15 seconds

14.96 seconds

6.01 seconds

1.08 seconds

0 seconds

And this is now on the VPS:

Load time (secs)

0.51 seconds

0.78 seconds

0.74 seconds

0.59 seconds

0.82 seconds

1.04 seconds

0.63 seconds

0.48 seconds

1.67 seconds

1.88 seconds

Load time (secs)

0.52 seconds

0.78 seconds

0.71 seconds

0.44 seconds

0.79 seconds

1.05 seconds

0.63 seconds

0.47 seconds

1.53 seconds

1.83 seconds

Those last two sites are Access db sites.

Mitchel, if you want a look into my account, let me know and I'll set you up with a login.

Well, well, well...  I should have read this before my last post:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/130379/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I am a customer of WH4L, and I have had great service since I first became a customer about 3 years ago.  They have always been very responsive and I have never experienced any communication issues.

However, I have been experiencing slow load times during these last 2 weeks (only) on a shared account.  This didn't happen until two things first happened:

  1. I upgraded DNN to 4.4.1, then to 4.5.1
  2. I added subdomains using the same DNN instance

I use them for all of my freelance work (nearly all DNN), but I have noticed that each of my accounts have slightly different control panels (i.e., links and menus in different places).  So far, I am only having issues with my personal web site.  All of my freelance clients are currently running fine on WebHost4Life.  I have not had any issues with the database (2000 and 2005), e-mail, or anything else.

The one thing I don't like about their e-mail service is that some e-mails sent through their SMTP servers will not get to their intended recipients because the e-mail headers are not always added correctly.  I did find some inconsistently with the SMTP server they tell you to use for script-based and application-generated e-mails.  I get told a different SMTP address each time.  But each time the e-mail has been getting sent.

I guess there must be a better host out there.  However, is there one for the same price witht the features we need to run DNN?

Just to be fair, I need to let everyone know that WH4L just fixed my page load issue.  I am running much faster now.  Though I am sure it would be MUCH faster on a VPS account.  :)  It didn't take long, and I didn't have to go back and forth with their support staff.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones?  :)
