Is it possible to create a module where a person can search by zip code and it reference an internal database I created with a customer list? Thanks, Wes

Yes you can reference another database from your module.

There are many thought processes on how to do this.

Some people like the quick and dirty way by just using a connection that you prompt the user for via the module settings, others recommend making a custom dataprovider and adding the connection inside the web.config.  That is really up to your specific implementation needs.
