My experience with DNN is being frustrating. I don't really know why people use it.... and that news on the splash page must be propaganda !!

Since I decided to use DNN to setup an simple ecommerce website ... It is what they say DNN is capable of ... I've experienced every sort of issues.

  • First with localization
  • secondly with the store , as it is almost impossible to add a new payment processor ...and if possible you have to do by following a bible like manual ...
  • most of the native modules doesn't work properly and when they do   they present very limited capabilities
  • The DNN Forum is pretty useless , as people are so inexperienced that the answers in it are very poor in did. And when some one who knows something answer something , they do like if everybody  born knowing everything
  • Gallery Module doesn't work properly

There are so many other issues , like installation and the use of  determined host providers that I would write an entire journal about it . However , unfortunately I don't have the time for it .

But I wold like to highlight here is tha if you opt to use MAGENTO, you'll see what a true web development framework is capable of .

I'm really unfortunate to have chosen the wrong technology to work with. That is life! Living and learning ...I just hope to help some one by sharing my experience ...Of course if they let my post go through.

Thank you DNN

Bye. I hope for ever !!!

Carlos

Clearly you haven't looked at third party modules and expect everything to provided for you for free. Ventrian modules and Active Forums would have easily sorted you out, and there are other localization solutions I believe... although you don't state the requirement.

There are also third party store modules but I believe they vary in quality right now (not sure, I haven't had to do a store site for a while thankfully).

If you expect everything to be provided to you on a plate for free, then yes, I suggest you go elsewhere.

Ok,

There are four or five e-commerce solution available to DNN . Ranging from very complex installations , to badly documented and very expensive ones. I don't expect everything to come for free but I would expect something clear and easier for novices. If you take a Look in MAGENTO it requires a much greater set of skills than DNN however I can get a fully functional e-commerce solution with all the trimmings that a global presence would require in less than a week . I would be very happy to pay for a decent support team to solve problems that really are out of my reach , but waste my time with problems that suppose to be resolved prior to release , is something that really turn me of , an example is the newly released form and List module which does not work in DNN 4.9.2  as well.

So, if you've got offended by my post , I suggest you give a try not only on MAGENTO but even on osCommerce and do your own evaluation .I'm sure that you'll change your mind.

And yes I'll happily go to somewhere else as soon as I deliver the last solution that I'm building with DNN.

Thanks for suggesting.

We are not offended by your post, we are just sorry to hear that you were not successful implementing your solutions using DNN.

Please appreciate the fact that DNN is NOT an e-commerce sollution, but rather an application framework with basic CMS capabilities. There are a lot of free and commercial modules available for DNN that add a myriad of functionality. E-commerce is just an example of such a functionality. It is at all possible that the available solutions do not suit your purposes and that other products are better for your situation. No hard feelings.

I have made dozens of sites now using DNN.  I have become very profecient on the platform and I find it to be very stable and powerful.  I am a one-man-show though and if I was to expand and offer more services, DNN would not be the only platform that I would use.  If I was to do an eCommerce site I would not use DNN, but if I had a site already done and wanted to add eCommerce, I would be happy that the site is sitting on DNN.

For me, DNN would be nearly redundant if it were not for Ventrian modules.  Had I not taken the time to learn the Ventrian modules, I would have sourced a different platform.  Now with Ventrian modules and MetaPost from IT Crossing I have complete novices adding really great content all on their own.

Many of the core modules are just not that great and Gallery is worst of all IMO.  Blog works great though, so does News feeds, Reports, and UDT.

Use Helferlien form for free forms

Use Oliver Hine for a cool gallery and a weather module (free).

There is also a good Yahoo weather module for free.

Use Ventrian for Listings, articles, navigation and more.

There is also a free forum module if you don't like Active Forums or DNN forums.

Shopping carts suck though.
