This thread is in circles. Donovan says he 'has the same problem' but clearly does not because he then goes on to say 'except....its different'. This thread now seems to have several different 'same problems'.

Donovan. To solve this you should start a new thread. Give a precise description of YOUR problem:
- what you did
- what happened
- how that was different to what you expected

That way you might get a useful answer.

Hi Richard,

My problem IS the same as frank-araya's in that when trying to create a new project using the "DotNetNuke C# Compiled Module" I first get the "...Would you like to create the virtual directory now?" error message followed by the ..."Creating a virtual directory is only supported on the local IIS server" error message.

The difference is that I can see my DNN localhost site at http://dnndev (as a result of configuring the Hosts file as you suggested). That however still has not resolved the issue so as it's still the same issue that we started with and configuring the hosts file did not solve it. I'm not sure what to try next. And certainly starting a new thread doesn't make sense when the problem is still the same but we're now simply further along the trial and error trail of finding a solution?

His message says "Could not find the server 'http://dnndev' on the local machine..." If yours has that then ISTM that's it the problem to start with.

Ah, ok... I see... similar but not the same. Comes from days of being frustrated by this issue after reading countless posts!

I'm going to start from scratch for the third time now and follow the dev environment setup again. I'm not holding out much hope.

Thanks to all for the help.

That's part of the problem. No-one has actually linked to the instructions they are following. So no-one knows what you are actually doing.
