I'm having a problem with my hosting provider about storing video files on my DNN site. I want to use the Respository to allow users to store files, some of which may be video files which they prohibit. Is there any way to tie the upload to an offsite file sharing provider and have the repository work seamlessly as if the files were local? If so does anyone have a recommendation for a service provider that will work in this manner

Well, there are 2 parts to that question, I can certainly help with the 1st part

On the repository module, edit the form.html file for the template you are using, and change the [FILE] token to [URLCONTROLFILE] and change the [IMAGE] token to [URLCONTROLIMAGE].  That will tell the module to render the core URL control for uploading files and images. The core URL control allows you to upload a file to your server, or enter a URL to the file if it resides on another server.

As far as finding another host, there are plenty around and it mostly will depend on your budget and how much disk space you think you are going to use. I can't help your there.   Personally, I use WebHost4Life.com.  I have had no problems at all with them, although , as with most things, your mileage may vary.  PowerDNN is generally regarded as one of the best for hosting DNN sites, and as expected will cost a little more than others.

Video is such an integral part of the internet these days, if your hosting provider won't let you upload video files, then I would stongly suggest getting another hosting provider rather than have to pay for 2 providers, one for hosting your web site, and one for hosting yoru files.

Unfortunately it is Webhost4Life that I am having the problem with. They limit your file upload abilities by establishing very low upload quotas to prevent you from using the site as a video server. Dealing with them on this issue is not much fun so I am looking at alternatives to house the uploads.

I've had minimal experience with Hosted File Sharing. The one that I've worked with, MediaFire, has their own loading mechanism so it's not as simple as just giving the Respository the URL. Does anyone know of a file hoster that just allows you to drop file into a folder without using some sort of proprietary file loader?

I'm not shilling for WH4L, but what upload quotas are you talking about? Their Advanced Plan is $10/month and includes 100GIG of disk space. They support streaming media in Flash or Windows Media format, and unlimited bandwidth.  Maybe there is a quota that I'm not aware of, but I am not aware of it.

That's what I thought. I don't want to start a bash session on them but their position on this really doesn't conform with their marketing. They have instituted an FTP quota that limits how much you can ftp up to your site. Originally it is set to 2GB. You have to REALLY fight to get it set any higher. Once you hit that limit you can't upload anything. It's really limiting what I can do with my new site. In my case I've only used 5.0409GIG out of my 100GIG and every time I want to add something to the site I have to go thru support and beg them to increase my quota. They are less than hospitable about it.

My problem started because I uploaded a handful of videos of my kid playing a sport and linked them to a webpage so college coaches could view them. In addition I just upgraded my version of DNN and left the zip file from Backup Script in a folder on the site. From my vantage point neither one of these are pushing the envelope as far as a use but that is not how they see it. Here is a response they just sent me

"Mass File Storage and Backup Storage and Mass Video/Media Storage is prohibited on all of our shared hosting plans.

Please download the backup files on C:\hosting\webhost4life\member\... to your local PC instead of storing server.

Thanks."

This is why I was asking the question. The new website I am building has a social networking component to it. I want to use the repository as a library for members to share articles, links to youtube videos and play animations (its a basketball site). I imagine that members will end up uploading a fair amount of materials and see now that it is going to be a major issue. I also figure that offloading the storage component of the site probably makes sense on a number of levels but I am trying to envision how to set it up so it works seamlessly. I believe that most of these hosted file sharing providers use some sort of proprietrary loader. Any suggesions?
