I am unable to get my blog to auto summarize.  It used to do this just fine but seems like since I installed DNN 4.9 this doesnt work.  Here is a copy of my module settings:

Basic Settings Make Entry Summary Mandatory: When entering a blog entry, this setting forces the user to enter a summary of their blog entry. Limit Auto-Generated Entry Summary To: Enter the desired cutoff in characters for the auto-generated summary of blog entries. To set no limit, enter a value of 0. Use the avanced option labeled Enforce Summary Truncation to also truncate entries with summaries. The default is to only truncate auto-generated summaries. Limit Search Summary To: It is strongly suggested that during search operations you limit the length of the entry returned so that results can be scanned quickly. Limit Upload Image Width To: You can limit the image width to a maximum with this option Limit recent entries to: You can limit the number of entries for Most recent entries. Limit Recent RSS entries to: You can limit the number of RSS entries for Most recent entries.

Comment Settings Show Avatars: Check to show Gravatar images next to comments. Image Width: Enter the width of the Gravatar image. The default width (48) matches the default style of the comments Image Rating: Gravatar images are rated based on the content. G rated images are appropriate for all audiences while PG, R and X rated images may contain inappropriate for some audiences. G - Suitable for all audiences PG - Possibly offensive, typically suitable for audiences 13 and above R - Intended for audiences 17 and above X - Even more mature than R Default Image URL: These images will be used for comments left by users without a Gravatar. About Identicon, Wavicon, and MonsterID: Gravatar will be displayed for users who have one, otherwise, a unique identifying image will be created for them based on the IP address of their computer, or on their email address if provided. About custom images: provide the complete URL to the image (including "http://") Gray Man Identicon Wavatar MonsterID Custom Custom Image URL: URL to custom avatar image (including "http://"). Used only if "Custom" is selected above. Show Website: Check to allow website to be included with comment. Show Title: Check to allow users to create unique titles for entry comments Allow Hyperlinks in Comments Check to allow hyperlinks to be entered in comments. Allow Images in Comments Check to allow images to be included in comments. Allow Basic formatting in Comments Check to allow basic formatting in comments (b or strong, i or em, u and blockquote)

SEO Settings Show unique title If you enable this option a blog specific title will be displayed in the title bar of the browser Show SEO Friendly URL If you enable this option, then the URL will be modified to replace default.aspx with the title of the blog entry as follows: .../Blog-Entry-Title.aspx. This URL format can help with search engine optimization. The default is set to true. Manage Entry Links Regenerate the permalink saved for the entries shown in this module. This is useful mainly for regenerating the permalinks after a change has been made to the URL format for a site. Regenerate all Permalinks for this Module

Advanced Settings Allow Upload Options: If you enable this option you give users the permission to upload images and attachments to their blog entry. Personal Blog Page Select the blog which should be used on this tab. For a general Blog page please don't select a specific Blog Enable DNN Search If you enabled this option the content of that module will be indexed by the DNN search, please take care of that you only enbable this option for one module (your main blog page), if you enable this option for more then one module you will get duplicated search results Enable Social Bookmarks If you enable this option, a social bookmarks toolbar will be added to your blog entry page. Enforce Entry Summary Limit Checking this option will cause both auto-generated and actual entry summaries to be truncated based on the value entered in the 'Limit Entry Summary To' setting above. Include Summary in Entry: If this option is enabled, the summary (if available) will be shown on the top of the single entry view.

I'm having issues with summary too although my case may be a little different. I normally use the split post feature from WLW  and metaPost to have different Summary and different post but it seems like the 3.05 treats everything as one for the full blog post. :-(

this is a known "bug" of the FCKEditor, it inserts those tags, hence the blog module "thinks" that the user meant to insert a summary and uses this chunk of HTML as summary. I have read of someone who fixed this upgrading to the latest version of the FCK editor without altering the HTML Provider, but I am unable  to remember the link. If I find it, I will be posting.
