OK, All folder permissions are set correctly, I've tried a new install of DNN 4 and it's giving me the exact same error, failing to install the Portal and then that's that!

I would really like to get DNN up and running but it's being a total pain in the backside - can anybody help with this situation??

Here's the full install page:

Are you installing on a server that you have access to?  Are you able to manipulate IIS and assign permissions or are you using a shared hosting account?  Quite often the error you are referring to has to do with missing permissions.

From looking at your log it does not look like you are placing the DNN Framework within the IIS directory. The default IIS directory is C:\Inetpub\wwwroot.  If you have place the DNN outside of the IIS root directory you have to ensure to give the Asp.Net user account permissions on the folder that you have placed the DNN Framework.  I know that this has been mentioned before but I like to be thorough.  The Asp.Net user account does not have permission to interect with any folder or object outside of the IIS directory.  This is for security, so you must manually assign permission to outside folders.  Please note that I am talking about the physical folder (as physical as you can get with data...) and not the virtual folder that is created within IIS.  These are two different entities.

If you are installing on a shared hosting account then you can refer to the instructions on my website for installing on Go Daddy.  The instructions are for a medium security environment and can be applied to any hosting provider.

I've followed all the instructions I could find on the installation of DNN, I've tried installing this many times now, I have spoken to 1and1 (my host) and they pointed me to their own guide for the installation of DNN which I have followed again and it still fails all the time.

I've set permissions to full on every folder just to make sure it's not a write error.

Why does DNN install not throw an error when it fails, the installation screen appears to be successful unless you read the whole thing and you can't perform a re-install without deleting the database and editing the files again (due t the new database name) and reupload everything.

It's all very annoying and nobody seems to be able to help.

What hosting company are you using?   Are you getting an error message, if so what is it?
