I am not happy with modules that cost more than say $300. DNN module developers can make money from volume. I feel that some Commercial DNN developers stopped improving their products. I am not sure if this is a reflection of anything like  DNN market not growing?

As an ex-module vendor - I disagree with this Tony - I don't think it is possible to make money off volume sales in DNN. Every sale means more customer support and more requests. High, recurring licenses are the only model that works IMO... and then you run the risk of the Core competing with you.

WRT News Modules (I think I started this thread 5 years ago ;) - I am surprised more module developers are not incorporating Bootstrap into their modules - then it would be styled like the host site (I don't make any DNN sites without a Bootstrap-backed skin on Azure these days).

Templating always seems to be the biggest bug-bear to solve...

People don't want to pay recurring licenses if they don't have to. Just pay a one time fee. If I buy a shopping cart, I don't want to be paying every month if I am hosting it myself, unless the hosting and service is done by another company. I know recurring revenue works for the vendor, but it doesn't work for the customer unless it's a SaaS app. I know support can get expensive and can drain the profits. I knew it killed some DNN module vendors and they exited the DNN market. I am guessing that's what happened to Engage & Gumbosoft. That's why software has to be reliable and easy to easy. This cuts a lot on support. If I were to create a module, I will offer free support for maybe a month. If they need more support, they pay for it. I can't be selling a module for $50 and give support for it for months. My hourly fee is more than $50 so it makes no sense to work on a support issue if it takes a long time. If I worked 15 minutes on support for a copy, I am already losing money.

This is a problem. If you stop giving support after a while, users will start giving bad reviews which will affect future sales.

DNN modules and skins are already more expensive than other CMS counterparts. On Themeforest and Codecanyon almost everything is under $100 and a lot are under $50. With DNN, high end skins uses to cost like $89. Now I see skins for $149. WordPress plugins are cheap and of high quality. For example Slider Revolution is a very good slider. It sells for $19 only and it sold more than 27000 copies. One can only dream to sell a fraction of that on DNN.

I agree that as a customer if I pay a recurring cost I expect recurring value!

Unfortunately this is not the case with many vendors and services.

The once-off model would only work if the product did not require any more support - for example, when you release a Skin it general only requires a few more maintenance releases but the product is largely complete. However, with certain modules it is never-ending - for example, with the Smart-Thinker Social Network Suite - I had people buying it for $30 (2 months support and license for 3 DNN Portals) and then generate months of development work with requests and configuration support calls (I agree- this is down to the module design. It's a lot easier now as there are standards and patterns in place but 6 years ago it was a free for all).

The reality is that as a module developer I was making 1 or 2k profit a month and working like a slave. Hopefully it's more rewarding now but the DNN eco system needs to grow a lot more to support the Developers. I also think the Core could provide more support to the eco-system, although they too have business to run and mouths to feed.

The other advice I have to wanna-be module developers is to pick a relatively simple, finite utility module  or fill a gap in the community product. An example of this would be a good plug in for Active Social/Journal with templating options etc.
