Can anyone think of a reason that a URL such as

http://somesite/default.aspx?tabid=72

would work correctly, while the DNN Friendly URL to the same page

http://somesite/somesection/sometab.aspx

will throw a 404 Missing Page error?

This is the problem we are facing. We had to restore a DNN site to a new server after our server's motherboard conked out. We restored the SQL db and copied all the site files from a backup. After hooking the site to the restored database, the site pages only work when the non-friendly URL format is used, even though the setting for Friendly URLs is set to true.

Does this sound like a problem with:

A) The database
B) The DNN setup
C) Windows Server 2003 settings
D) IIS settings

Where should we look?

If you have this url:
http://somesite/default.aspx?tabid=72

The friendly url dnn would provide would be
http://somesite/tabid/72/default.aspx

If you wanted it to be this:
http://somesite/somesection/sometab.aspx
You would need a custom 3rd party module that was your url provider. Something like dnn masters or ifinity url master. If at one point your site was working with urls like the previous and now it is not, I would first look for the 3rd party url module you were using and make sure it is enabled. Compare web.configs  between the original site and the one you moved.

Actually the default url provider in DNN does create a url in this format when the urlFormat property is set to humanfriendly (urlFormat="humanfriendly") in the web.config.

Thank you all for your input on this. I just wanted to add an update to say that we found the problem. After troubleshooting pretty much everything that we could think of, we finally discovered that the problem was due to a corrupt IIS virtual directory. We simply deleted the existing virtual directory that the site was in, and then created a new one. The problem vanished.

Just goes to show you that sometimes the solution can be a simple one...
