When I took over the IT dept here, I realized there was a lot of work to be done. I've started working on upgrading things to the newer versions and getting rid of pirated software.I have a Win 2k3 Server that is currently running v1.0.10 and it is connecting to a MSSQL 2000 install that is not a legal license. I have succeeded in moving my DNN install to a 2k3 virtual machine that is running MSSQL 2008 R2 Express. When I try to jump straight from 1.0.10 to 5.5.1, I get a screen that starts listing all the updating and upgrading it is doing, but 90% of them fail. At the end of all of those, the site won't load. It gives an error screen and this shows up in the URL Default.aspx?tabid=93&error=Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object.&content=0 In my working v1 install, tab 93 is the home tab so I can tell its trying to load.

I also tried to go from 1 to v3.3.3 (one of the earliest versions I could find an upgrade install for) but got also got errors.

Should I be trying to go from v1 to some form of v2, then v3, etc? Or is there a good upgrade path? I can't lose the data in the old version, but I really want to upgrade it to the newest version so I can take advantage of the new features.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

wow - i have to say you've some work in front on you.You can view the upgrade path in the wiki - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Wiki/tabid/1409/Page/Suggested_Upgrade_Path/Default.aspx (theres no notes on 1.x but an upgrade to 2.0.1 would be your first tep. Once on 2.0 read the detaied install guide at.http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Support/Documentation/DownloadableFiles/tabid/478/Default.aspx , it will how how to move to 3.x. The biggest issue you have is that you're going from .net 1.1/sql 2000, to versions that don't support either of those parts.

I dont know what data you have, but I think it will be less work to start over from scratch.
If you have to upgrade you will have problems with all modules going from 2.x are to the 3.x as there was breaking changes when going to rel 3.13 if I recall right was the first version of 3.x
You can find more releases here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dnn/f...
So the first step is to try to go to 3.13
If you try :) make sure your home page dont have any modules on it. Try to find your modules in that time period an upgrade all modules.
If you have time to do this and make it work then we can take the next step ;)
