Hi Folks,

I am having some display difficulties with Adobe Flash with some IE 8 browsers on both Vista and Win XP. This is happening with the new media module. However I don’t think the module or DNN are really the source of the problem. It is most likely IE 8. However, I thought someone on this forum may have experienced similar problems and have some insights. Here is the description.

On a test web site we get skewing of some (not all) Flash movie modules. The whole module is moved out to the right. The specifics with regard to the environments are – Win XP and Vista, latest version of IE 8, latest version of the Flash Player, DNN 4.9.5, Media Module 03.03.00. Note that we are using a new skin (NukeSkin) from DnnSkin.net but the combination of this skin and the new media module on another test site seems to be OK. One difference is that the problem site has a horizontal menu and the other one has a vertical one.

This doesn’t happen with all IE 8 browsers. In fact on one test machine we can log in via one account (an administrator account) and the site displays OK with no skewing. But when we log in via another account (a non administrator account) it is skewed to the right in IE 8. We haven’t seen any such problems with other browsers like FireFox. Recently we discovered that maximizing the size of the browser works. But unfortunately in another case it seems the opposite worked! In other words we don’t seem to get consistent results.

This is extremely perplexing and frustrating. Has anyone seen this? I was thinking of doing some experimentation with the site but I don’t really know where to begin. I guess checking the source of the page for the correct display against the skewed ones would be a start. Any other ideas?

The issue you've described sounds like a CSS related problem.  When troubleshooting and fixing problems like this, make sure you test with the admin elements enabled and disabled.  As you've found out, the elements can cause unintended display issues when you don't.

Thanks for the reply Will. I am still struggling with this. When you say admin elements are you referring to the Advanced Options tab under the Tools -> Internet Options menu? I have changed some of these trying to get my browser to misbehave without success.

Also note that I recently learned that the F12 key on one of the IE8 browsers that has this problem does not work. That one is a Win XP machine the other is a Vista machine which I haven’t check on. One guy on the MS IE developers forum had this to say:

“That does sound like a configuration/install problem. Check if there is a value Disabled under the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IEDevTools key. You can also try reset IE settings.”

Have you run into anything like this?

When I refer to "admin elements" I was assuming that both you and I were referring to things like the action buttons and actions menus that the modules have when you're allowed to edit the modules.

Since you're IE instances are having other quirks, I would point you to disabling any unnecessary browser add-ons, such as toolbars.  I would strongly caution against messing with your registry at all cost, unless you have absolutely no alternative, and are confident and comfortable with the possible results of altering the registry.  (If you don't already know, altering the registry can easily lead to a computer that won't boot up, for example.)

OK, you were referring to DNN admin. I was referring to whether IE8 was installed by a Windows administrator. Apparently there have been issues related to that. We never even get to the DNN admin stuff. On two browsers (only IE8 browsers BTW) when this site (www.ssciweb.com) is accessed the middle Flash movie is about 2 inches to the right. The other two are OK.

I have done things with the registry but you are right it can be problematic. My customer has access to a tech guy. I’ll just have him query the registry and match it with what I have. He can try some of your suggestions about the browser add-ons also. My handicap is that I am 1000+ miles away from either of the machines with this problem but I will get a chance to look at the Vista machine in a couple of weeks.

Right now I am looking at the source from the customer’s browser that he e-mailed to me and the source from mine looking for differences. Since this only occurs on two browsers I think I’ll have to do a step-by-step comparison of everything I can think of and look for differences. I am pretty convinced it is not DNN but has something to do with browser or the Flash Player configuration, installation, maybe some add-on, or another app that they are running, etc. If I find the answer I’ll post it here.
