From what I remember the Mailconnector in AS relies on a third party component to pull mails via pop3. Event if the Corp wanted to it would be difficult if not impossible to to release that component with the CE version.

I guess it won't take long that someone builds another mail connector as a third party module. Mind you that once AF is open source it will become very easy to integrate other stuff. I could well think of a mailconnecor module that not only posts into a forum but also into a blog or where else it might be appropriate.

Cheers,

Agreed, there is nothing in the CE license that prevents third party developers from competing with the corps offerings.

If you look at it from this angel, the cost of AF enterprise mail connector feature will become less expensive than the full license, requiring only the overhead of maintaining the mail connector by a third party.

My confidence in the corporations commitment to the open source and open core strategy has been strengthened.

Thanks Lars.

I know we will never be able to please everyone all the time.  But we do work very hard to do the most good for the most people possible.  This often comes with sacrifice on our part as well.  In this case we've chosen to give away a substantial amount of what we've invested in... believing that the abundance mentality will rule and that we're building a bigger and better future for everyone who uses the platform.  We do our best to keep cranking out the most valuable and capable web content management platform on the web and we do it for free.  We continue to enforce a level playing field even for ourselves using the open core and public extension points that are available to everyone.  We add features, controls, enhancements to the Community Edition without usage limits.  We invest in public video, training, documentation and community communication channels that are all free.  We encourage and solicit open source module development in the Forge (which is about to get a huge face-lift soon).  We do a lot of things that traditional businesses would not only not do, but erect barriers to anyone else doing as well.  My personal passion around DotNetNuke has much to do with the fact that we are not trying to do what everyone else is doing, but instead trying to do something radically different and unconventional.

I know that almost every decision we make has an adverse effect on someone.  This was true even when DotNetNuke was just an open source hobby project.  Every time we make an architecture decision we affect folks who've made a different architecture choice.  I remember when we finalized the skinning engine, it rendered 3 other popular skinning methods useless.  But it was the right choice and the platform has really benefited by it.

One of Will's major concerns entering into this arrangement was concern for his Enterprise customers.  I am confident that as the actual implementation details continue to work themselves out that this will continue to be true and they will be cared for to the best of our ability.

So are you saying these modules (AS/AF) will be enhanced with every release (like AM has done almost every month).? Or will they be left in the dust and not updated for a couple years in the CE edition?

Looking at this.. I'd find it hard to believe. Note, I'm working on facts here not opinion.

Whether free or paid, any module which tends to have more frequent updates and activity does so because of a conscientious leader. In the list that you provided there are a few projects doing really well, with strong and conscientious leaders making frequent changes and supporting the projects in forums, etc.  In some cases those projects have had leaders who were once active, but for one reason or another are not now.

A real problem is with that list in general.  This list represents the historical collection of modules that were either originally part of the iBuySpy workshop or were added to our team collection in the year following the advent of the module extension model around version 3.0.  Since that time, these modules have been managed purely by volunteer community resources with varying degrees of success, but all have remained packaged with the core.

At a point in our history, this made a lot of sense.  But it really doesn't any more and you will see this start changing fairly soon.  These projects rightfully belong solely in the Forge with the many other free extensions produced by other community members.  There are a lot of good alternatives to those projects that should have the same kind of visibility that these projects do.  They're simply better.  We're sill working on recruiting and encouraging volunteer effort on these modules, but rather than ignore the obvious, we're also working on ways to make the best free modules more visible and available, whether they are in that collection or not.

Will and his team are very conscientious.  The AS / AF collateral will be considered core functionality and have dedicated resources on staff to enhance and support them.
